Position: Shelter Staff Veterinarian
Salary Range: $130k-$160k

Department:  Medical

Exempt/Non-Exempt: Exempt, full time position 

Hours and days will vary depending on organizational needs.

  

Reports to: Executive Director

   

General Position Summary: This role functions as a working manager, actively providing veterinary care for all animals located within the DCSPCA campus and in DCSPCA foster homes while supervising medical staff and managing the shelter’s veterinary services.

Essential Function/Major Responsibilities:

  • Assist with development of and maintaining medical protocols and SOPs
  • Oversee the health and wellness of all animals located within the DCSPCA campus and in DCSPCA foster homes
  • Oversee vaccination and parasite prevention programs
  • Lead infectious disease management and outbreak response
  • Diagnose and treat medical conditions in shelter animals
  • Create and implement treatment plans
  • Perform spay/neuter surgery for shelter population as needed; perform other surgical procedures when deemed appropriate 
  • Maintain accurate and complete medical records in accordance with legal and professional standards
  • Assist with internal and public relations consultation and education services as they pertain to veterinary medical issues
  • Provide forensic examinations, written reports, and expert testimony in animal cruelty investigation as required
  • Provide telephone consultation with staff during normal business hours, with after-hours consultation available as needed
  • Upholds the highest standards of veterinary ethics and animal welfare
  • Collaborate with veterinary technicians and assistants
  • Communicates medical information clearly and compassionately to staff, volunteers, fosters, and adopters
  • Ensure compliance with NYS Agriculture and Markets regulations
  • Filling in for other areas and performing other tasks/functions as needed, including helping out at special events
 

Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited veterinary medical school
  • License to practice veterinary medicine in the state of New York
  • Valid DEA license and willingness to supply license for ordering accounts including controlled substances
  • 2+ years of veterinary experience; shelter medicine or high-volume spay/neuter experience preferred
  • Enthusiasm for shelter medicine and the ability to see the value of shelter animals.
  • Comfort with performing behavioral euthanasia as necessary
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, customer service, and time management skills.
  • Ability and initiative, working with minimal supervision and direction
  • Demonstrates professionalism and sound clinical judgment
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English required; bilingual (Spanish) strongly preferred
  • Participate in the following administrative tasks: leadership meetings, strategic planning, support fundraising messaging around medical cases, support grant writing (medical data and outcomes)
  • Serve as a public-facing spokesperson for medical issues
  • The ability to treat people and animals with respect and contribute to effective teamwork.
  • Foster and nurture relationships and public relations beneficial to the organization and our programs
  • Comfort and ability to work with animals of unknown disposition and those who exhibit medical and other problems, as well as aggressive tendencies

Physical Requirements:

  • Physical ability to walk and or stand on your feet throughout a normal workday required. Ability to bend and squat
  • Physical ability to engage in repetitive motions of legs, arms, and hands and to hear and see clearly
  • Must be able to perform the essential physical functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation
     

Working conditions:

Conditions may include working alone, frequent interruptions, and some evenings/weekends meetings and classes.
